Background history
Bernard Law Montgomery, 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein, also known as “Monty”, (17 November 1887, London – 24 March 1976, Alton), British infantry officer at the beginning of the First World War, then senior officer of the British staff during the interwar period. He held prominent responsibilities of command during the Second World War and especially after the end of the Second World War, as Chief of the Imperial General Staff (CIGS) from 1946 to 1949, then Deputy Supreme Commander of NATO forces from 1951 to 1958.
